How to Write a Resume Summary That Gets Interviews
Recruiters spend an average of 6-7 seconds on an initial resume scan. A strong summary is your one chance to make them stop and read further — and it must also satisfy ATS keyword requirements.
Resume Summary vs. Objective: Which to Use
Resume Objective (old style): Tells the employer what YOU want
"Seeking a marketing position to use my communication skills"
→ Avoid. It's about you, not what you offer.
Resume Summary (modern): Tells the employer what you DELIVER
"Results-driven marketing manager with 7 years growing B2B SaaS brands. Increased organic traffic by 180% at previous role using SEO-led content strategy. Expertise in HubSpot, Google Analytics, and paid media."
→ Use this. It's about value you bring.
Use a Summary for:
• 3+ years of experience
• Career transitions (reframe your narrative)
• When applying for a specific senior role
Objective is only acceptable for:
• Complete career changers with zero relevant experience
• Recent graduates with limited work history
The 3-Part Resume Summary Formula
Every strong summary has 3 components:
[1] Who you are (role + years + specialty)
[2] What you've achieved (your biggest quantified win)
[3] What you bring (key skills or expertise matching the JD)
Template:
"{Role} with {X} years of experience in {specialty/industry}. {Achievement: verb + result + metric}. Expertise in {Skill 1}, {Skill 2}, and {Skill 3}."
Example for a software engineer:
"Full-stack software engineer with 5 years building scalable SaaS products. Architected a microservices platform at [Company] that reduced deployment time by 70% and handled 10M+ monthly active users. Expert in React, Node.js, Kubernetes, and AWS."
Example for a sales manager:
"Enterprise sales manager with 8 years exceeding quota in B2B software. Grew APAC revenue from $2M to $7M in 3 years through strategic account development and team expansion from 4 to 12 reps. Proficient in Salesforce, MEDDIC, and challenger selling."
Tailoring Your Summary for ATS
ATS parses the summary section just like the rest of the resume. Keyword placement here can boost your match score significantly.
5 rules for an ATS-optimized summary:
1. Use the exact job title from the posting — if they say "Senior Product Designer," use that phrase
2. Mirror 2-3 specific skills or requirements directly from the job description
3. Include your most important certification in the summary (not just the certifications section)
4. Avoid creative titles like "Marketing Ninja" or "Growth Hacker" — ATS won't recognize them
5. Keep it to 3-5 lines — summaries that are too long often have lower keyword density
Tool tip: Paste your summary into our ATS checker alongside the job description to see your keyword match score instantly.
