How Long Should a Resume Be in 2026?

One page or two? Executive or entry-level? The answer depends on your experience — and the consequences of getting it wrong go beyond aesthetics: a resume that's too long OR too short signals poor judgment to a recruiter before they've read a single bullet.

The Simple Rule: Resume Length by Years of Experience

0–3 years of experience → 1 page You don't have enough substantive experience to fill two pages without padding. A tight, well-curated 1-page resume signals self-awareness and strong editing ability. 3–10 years of experience → 1–2 pages If you can fill a second page with genuinely relevant content (not padded with old internships or high school activities), 2 pages is fine. If your second page is mostly white space, cut to 1. 10+ years of experience → 2 pages At this level, a 1-page resume will force you to cut meaningful achievements. Two pages is professional and expected. Executive / C-suite / Board → 2 pages maximum Even a 25-year CEO should be able to make a compelling case in 2 pages. The exception is academic CVs and government applications, which have no standard length limit.

Does Resume Length Affect ATS Screening?

Directly, no — ATS doesn't penalise you for having 2 pages vs 1. It reads all the text regardless. Indirectly, yes — in two ways: 1. Keyword density: A 2-page resume with the same keywords as a 1-page resume has lower keyword density. If you're padding content to fill space, your match score per word drops. Lean, relevant content scores better. 2. Recruiter read time: After ATS filtering, human reviewers spend 6–7 seconds on initial screening. If your most relevant experience is buried on page 2, it may never be seen. Put your best material on page 1. The goal: Every line on your resume should either contain a relevant keyword, demonstrate a quantified achievement, or signal a relevant credential. If a line does none of these, cut it.

What to Cut When Your Resume Is Too Long

If your resume runs 3+ pages, here's what to cut in priority order: 1. Roles older than 10-15 years — compress to a one-line mention or remove entirely unless they're uniquely relevant 2. Bullet points that describe responsibilities, not achievements — "Responsible for managing accounts" can go. "Grew account base from 40 to 110 clients in 18 months" stays. 3. Outdated technical skills — Remove skills from previous technology generations unless specifically relevant to the role (e.g., listing "Windows XP administration" in 2026) 4. Education details after 5+ years in the workforce — You don't need graduation year, GPA, or coursework once you have substantial work experience 5. References available upon request — This line is entirely unnecessary; remove it 6. Objective statement if you already have a summary 7. Excessive white space and large margins — Tighten margins to 0.5" and reduce spacing between sections

What to Add When Your Resume Is Too Short

If your resume is under 3/4 of a page and you're applying for mid-level or senior roles, these additions will strengthen it: 1. Quantify everything that currently isn't — go back through every bullet and add numbers 2. Add a skills section — if you don't have one, a well-structured skills section adds substance and keywords 3. Expand your professional summary — a 4-5 line summary with specific keywords legitimately improves length AND ATS score 4. Add a certifications or training section — any professional development, online courses, or certifications from the last 5 years 5. Add projects — especially relevant for developers, designers, and recent graduates 6. Add relevant volunteer work — especially for career changers who need to show adjacent experience Do NOT: increase font size, increase line spacing, or add excessive white space to fake length. Experienced recruiters see through this immediately.

Special Cases: Industry-Specific Resume Length

Academia / Research: CV (not resume) format applies. There is no standard page limit. Publications, grants, and conference presentations extend the document appropriately. Government / Federal jobs: US federal resumes are typically 4-5 pages and include detailed KSA (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities) statements. Following the USAJobs format is mandatory. Law: Legal CVs in the US typically run 2 pages. UK legal CVs are often 2-3 pages with more formal formatting conventions. Medical / Healthcare: CVs for physicians and consultants commonly run 3-5+ pages and include clinical experience, research, publications, and board certifications. Fintech / Startups: Strongly prefer 1 page regardless of experience level. A concise, sharp 1-pager signals the ability to communicate with clarity — a valued skill at startups. Creative industries: Portfolio link is more important than page length. Keep the resume 1 page and let the portfolio do the heavy lifting.
