Canva's resume templates are beautiful. They're polished, professional-looking, and easy to make. There's just one problem: most of them fail ATS screening — and they fail badly. If you've been submitting Canva resumes and getting no callbacks, this is likely why.
Why Canva Resumes Fail ATS
ATS (Applicant Tracking System) software doesn't see your resume the way a human does. It doesn't see colors, fonts, or layout. It reads raw text — and it reads it by parsing the document's underlying structure. Canva creates design-first documents optimized for visual presentation, not text parsing.
- Two-column layouts: Most Canva templates use multi-column designs. ATS parsers read left-to-right across the full width, so two-column text gets scrambled — your skills column gets mixed into your experience column, creating nonsense.
- Text in shapes and boxes: Canva places text inside graphic elements. Many ATS parsers cannot extract text from these boxes at all — your content simply vanishes.
- Icons and graphics: Canva templates typically include icons for contact info (envelope icon for email, phone icon for mobile). ATS parsers skip these entirely, sometimes corrupting the surrounding text.
- Non-standard fonts: Canva uses decorative and display fonts that may not exist on the server running the ATS parser, causing garbled output.
- PDF rendering: When you export from Canva as PDF, it creates a design PDF (vector/image hybrid) rather than a text-based PDF. Many ATS systems cannot extract text from these reliably.
- Headers and footers: Some Canva templates place contact information in a graphical header band. ATS parsers frequently skip document headers and footers entirely.
What Happens to Your Canva Resume in ATS
Here's what an ATS parser actually extracts from a typical two-column Canva resume: The text flows in reading order across columns — so "Skills Python | Work Experience Software Engineer at Google" becomes one garbled string. The parser can't distinguish your skills from your job titles, your dates from your achievements. Your resume scores near zero — not because of your qualifications, but because the parser can't read the file.
Test it yourself: Export your Canva resume as PDF, then copy-paste all text from it. If the text comes out scrambled or in the wrong order, your ATS score will be very low.

Not all Canva templates are equally bad. Here's how to identify the safer ones:
- Single-column layouts: If the entire resume flows in one column top-to-bottom, it parses much better. Look for Canva's "Simple" or "Minimalist" filter.
- No sidebar: Templates with a colored sidebar for skills are two-column by definition — avoid these.
- No icons: Templates using plain text for contact info (not envelope/phone icons) are safer.
- No skill bars or rating graphics: Graphical representations of skill levels (filled circles, bars) contribute nothing to ATS scoring.
- Download as PDF with "Flatten PDF" off: Canva's standard PDF is slightly better than the "Flatten" option for text extraction.
The Safest Alternatives to Canva for an ATS Resume
- Microsoft Word with a simple template: The most universally parseable. Use Word's built-in single-column templates. Save as .docx.
- Google Docs Serif template: Clean single-column, free, easy to use. Export as .docx for best ATS compatibility.
- LaTeX (Overleaf): Jake's Resume template on Overleaf produces perfect ATS output. Requires basic LaTeX knowledge.
- Plain text with careful formatting: A plain .docx with manual formatting using tabs and line breaks — surprisingly effective for ATS.
Can You Make a Canva Resume ATS-Compatible?
Partially. If you absolutely want to use Canva, choose only single-column, no-icon, no-sidebar templates. Then after downloading, paste your resume text into Word in the same structure and submit the Word version instead. Use Canva only as a visual reference for layout — not as the source file.
The better solution: Use a plain Word or Docs template for ATS applications, and keep a Canva version only for email attachments where a human will open it directly (not through an online portal).
How to Check If Your Current Resume Passes ATS
Upload your resume to our free ATS checker. It runs the same parsing logic that real ATS systems use — you'll see your score, which sections were parsed correctly, and what keywords are missing. If you're submitting a Canva resume and scoring below 50, the format is almost certainly the reason.
